Olympic Opening Ceremonies Competition?

I often hear people talking about the magnificence of the Chinese opening ceremony. I also appreciated the glorious display. However, I was not pleased to hear how many millions of dollars were spent for this event. I honestly believe that millions of Chinese people could have benefited greatly from the funds.

In my opinion, the leaders in every country have an obligation to help their people have their basic needs met of food, clothing and shelter. They exist to protect their citizens and assist people who are victims of disasters. It is also important for all Governments to provide education, equal opportunities, and much more to their people.

I was disturbed to hear things like, "How can anyone beat the Chinese ceremony!" Does the Olympic competition begin with the opening ceremony? How sad it is for the people, if that is the case. Especially during these hard economical times, it would be wonderful if countries valued providing for their citizens and created opening celebrations at a minimum cost. I would honor that county for their humane priorities. I am hoping that this wonderful precedent will be a reality in the near future.
